Kiwanis Kicks off Campaign for Shade on Hot Playground
The Kiwanis Club of Stuart is fast-tracking fundraising efforts to build a shade structure at Kiwanis Park
Stuart, FL. – The Kiwanis Club of Stuart is launching a campaign to raise $30,000 to build a shade structure to protect the playground equipment for kids at Kiwanis Park.
The campaign is kicking off with a Go Fund Me page and a Facebook page with the goal of raising the money so that construction can begin before the height of summer. The City of Stuart has agreed to match the goal of $30,000 to fund the purchase and construction of the shade structure.
“We’re really stepping up and trying to get this built quickly in time for the summer. Parents love to take their kids to this beautiful park, but the hot Florida sun beats down on the equipment and they can’t use it,” said Barbara Essenwine, Past President of the Kiwanis Club of Stuart. “We’ve seen children come to the park and leave crying because it’s too hot to play on. We need to change that.”
Over the past 30 years, the Kiwanis Club of Stuart has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars and thousands of hours of time in the development of the park. The playground is the only barrier free playground on the Treasure Coast – allowing children with and without disabilities to play side by side.
Construction is expected to take six weeks in the late fall of 2017.

Pancakes In The Park
(and optional green eggs and ham)
March 4, 2017
Our annual Pancakes In The Park breakfast was held on Saturday, March 4, 2017. As part of the breakfast we encouraged children to read as part of the celebration of the birthday of Dr. Seuss. In addition to the traditional pancakes, sausage, fruit, scambled eggs, and beverages we also served specialty pancakes (blueberry - chocolate chip, etc) and, in honor of Dr. Seuss, ham and optional green eggs for the kids.
Over 500 people attended the breakfast and reading events and, together with our sponsors, donors, friends and family, the KCOS raised over $8,000. for our community projects.
Many, many thanks to each of the following for being our Magnificent Level Sponsors of the 2017 Pancakes and Reading In The Park:
Martin County Historical Ornament Series
Martin County - Shark Capital of the World
You may be surprised to learn that Martin County was once the Shark Capital of the World. From use of sharks in commercial manufacturing of Vitamin A by individual boat yards and the Borden Company to the discovery and manufature of shark repellent. Each ornament comes with a history of sharks in Martin County.
Available now at the Stuart Heritage Museum, the
Stuart-Martin County and Palm City Chamber of Commerce’s and from Members of
the Kiwanis Club of Stuart
Since 1995, the Kiwanis Club of Stuart has produced annually an ornament celebrating the history of Martin County. The ornaments are handmade in the USA by nationally recognized, ChemArt and are accompanied by a booklet containing the local history relating to the ornament.
ChemArt is well known for producing the White House Ornament since 1981 and are often featured by the Discovery Channel during the holiday season on John Ratzenberger’s, Made in America.
The ornaments are solid brass, dipped in 14K gold and enameled using a silk screened process and still made by in the USA!!
100% of the profits from this ornament benefit children of Martin County.

Trying out the playground at Kiwanis Park
Gary Frechette, Florida Kiwanis District Governor - 2016-17
THANK YOU FOR BUILDING THE PLAYGROUND!!!!
The community build of the newest phase of the Kiwanis Park at Woodlawn was completed over the 2015 Memorial Day weekend as all of the play equipment was assembled. A grand opening was held on July 16, 2015.
This playground is usable by all children but the equipment and ramps allows children with disabilities to have access to slides, swings, and other exciting sensory equipment.
Hundreds of photos of the community build may be seen under the menu item on the left side of this page shown as "Photos" and the sub-menu item "Photos-Picasa."
The Kiwanis Club of Stuart spent 3 years raising funds and planning for the construction of the playground. The $200,000 in project costs are shared equally by the KCOS and the City of Stuart.
If you were there for the build, contributed materials, contributed food, contributed advertising, or in any other way helped make the playground a success, the KCOS and the City of Stuart, on behalf of the children who will use the playground over the coming decades, say THANKS TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU!!
The new playground does not have the natural tree shade that covers the other 2 playgrounds in the park. In order to make the playground usable during even the hotest part of each day we are planning on installing a shade structure over the playground. We have received plans for shade which will cost approximately $100K. If you would like to be one of our shade sponsors, please contact our club president, Evan Reif at Evan.Reif@scouting.org.
Individual donations are still being accepted in an effort to raise funds for the shade and you can do so on this website through the "Store Donation Center" accessible on the left column of this page.
